Dear Friends: There is no "business as usual" anymore. Today, it's more critical
than ever for businesses and government to come together, anticipate change and prepare for the future. We have worked hard over the past decade to build a strong economic foundation in Wisconsin. Despite recent market challenges, we can build on our strengths and rebound with an even more vibrant state economy.Wisconsin is a great place to grow a business. We enjoy a solid economic base, excellent infrastructure, world-class health care, one of the finest educational systems in the country and a clean environment. Employers also benefit from the strong work ethic of Wisconsin residents. These unique assets have allowed many businesses to thrive in our state. Many industry leaders are investing in growth in Wisconsin, including Harley-Davidson Motor Company, GE Medical Systems and Marshfield Clinic. We must continue pioneering new ways to help businesses prosper, creating more high-paying jobs in our state. We will achieve this by adapting to global competition, new technologies and emerging markets. Staying ahead of the curve also means supporting our traditional economic base - manufacturing, agriculture and small businesses. These firms will remain the cornerstone of Wisconsin's economy as they apply the "tools of technology" that will result in greater output and productivity. Our challenge today is to anticipate change and take action. At the 2002 Governor's Conference on Economic Development, I will share my plans for the future. We will also explore new strategies and tools to help sustain a strong economy. Don't miss this opportunity to help your organization, community and the state of Wisconsin stay ahead of the curve. Join us at the Governor's Conference on Feb. 13, 14 and 15 in Madison. Scott McCallum Governor |
