| Across the country, states and local governments are adopting "Smart Growth" legislation and implementing related strategic initiatives. However, not everyone agrees on the definition of smart growth; or whether the initiatives will actually accomplish the desired outcomes. |
| Our keynote speakers have had years of experience in California and Oregon dealing with smart growth. Each will bring a unique, but differing, perspective to the discussion. |
| Paul Zykofsky, program director, Center for Livable Communities, national initiative of the Local Government Commission, Sacramento, California, will talk about the importance of a new comprehensive model for economic growth as written in the guidebook for local policymakers, "The Ahwahnee Principles for Smart Economic Development." |
| John Charles, environmental policy director, Cascade Policy Institute, Portland, Oregon, will present a market-based approach to land use regulation. He writes extensively on environmental topics. His most recent paper is "Beyond Zoning: Land Use Controls in a Digital Economy." |
